Case Study: HP Omen Gaming Laptop Going Black and Restarting

Laptop opened for liquid damage inspection at KC Computer Staff in Blue Springs

A real repair from our Blue Springs bench, June 2026. Customer details removed.

The problem

An HP Omen gaming laptop kept overheating. The screen would go black and the laptop would restart on its own or need a forced restart. It often happened when the owner wasn’t even gaming. The fans had already been cleaned elsewhere. It didn’t help.

What we found

Two causes stacked on top of each other. A malware scan found roughly 330 infection traces, and that malware was running the CPU hard in the background. That’s why the laptop overheated at idle. The thermal paste between the CPU and the cooling assembly had also broken down, so the system couldn’t shed the extra heat.

The fix

  • Thermal paste replacement and cooling-system cleaning: $120
  • Full virus and malware removal: $130
  • Operating system optimization: $90
  • Diagnostic: $60

$400 total, on a written quote approved before any work started.

The result

Approved on a Wednesday afternoon, ready the next day.

The takeaway

Cleaning the fans treats one cause. When a laptop overheats while idle, look for something making the CPU work, not just something stopping the heat from leaving. More in our guide: Gaming laptop overheating and shutting down.
