Computer running slow? Here’s what’s actually causing it

Nobody brings in a slow computer the week it starts. They bring it in a year later, when the coffee finishes brewing before the browser opens, and the first thing most people say at the counter is some version of “I figured it was just old.”

Sometimes it is. But at our bench in Blue Springs, most of the slow machines we see aren’t worn out — they’re bottlenecked by one specific thing. And the difference matters, because one specific thing is fixable, usually for a fraction of what a new computer costs.

The usual suspects, in the order we find them

An old-style hard drive. If your computer was built with a spinning hard drive instead of a solid-state drive, that’s almost certainly your bottleneck — everything else in the machine spends its day waiting on it. This is the single most common cause we diagnose, and the most dramatic fix: an SSD upgrade routinely takes a five-minute boot down to under thirty seconds. We’ve seen boot times improve considerably after cloning a customer’s hard drive from an old mechanical drive to an SSD.

Not enough memory. With 4GB of RAM, a modern browser plus a video call is already past the limit, and the machine starts juggling. The tell: things are fine with one program open and fall apart with three.

Startup stowaways. Years of installed software quietly registering itself to launch at boot — updaters, assistants, toolbars. Individually harmless; collectively a parade your computer runs before it will listen to you.

Malware that isn’t dramatic. Not every infection throws pop-ups. Some just spend your computer’s effort elsewhere. If slowness arrived suddenly alongside odd behavior — a changed homepage, ads where there weren’t any — that’s a different article, and a $130 cleanup.

Heat. A computer that’s hot throttles itself on purpose. Slow that gets worse the longer the machine runs, plus loud fans, points at dust and dried thermal paste — the exact thing our $89 tune-up and thermal service exists for.

What’s safe to try at home

Restart properly — a full shutdown and cold start, not sleep; uptime measured in weeks is its own slowdown. Trim your startup list: Task Manager → Startup tab on Windows, and disable what you recognize and don’t need at boot. Uninstall what you don’t use, especially anything that came pre-loaded. And check your storage — a drive over about 90% full slows everything; clearing space helps more than people expect.

What we’d steer you away from: “PC cleaner” and “speed booster” downloads. The free ones are mostly ads, some are the malware they claim to fight, and none of them install faster memory.
